DON'T FORGET! Fall Adoption Special ant the Shelte DON'T FORGET! Fall Adoption Special ant the Shelter Tomorrow! Last weekend, we held a Rainy Day #AdoptionSpecial where 5 dogs and a rabbit got to go to their new forever home. One of which, Whiskey had been here for over 90 days. We were so happy to see these animals go home, we decided to do it again this Sunday. If you’re out and about tomorrow, you can stop by our #shelter at 415 Campbell Ave for our Fall Adoption Specials! On October 1st all adult dog adoption fees are being cut to $25 with an approved application. We are low on space right now, so the more animals who find homes, the more we can save. All of our animals will be happy to meet you so come on out to see us!
Frog, a 2 year old #frenchie came to us earlier th Frog, a 2 year old #frenchie came to us earlier this month from Roanoke County Police Department as a #stray with scars to prove a bit of a #roughpast. He was #adopted at our Rainy Day Adoption Event here at the #shelter last Saturday, and his new owners are so happy to have him as a #newmemberofthefamily, they wrote in to tell us about his #newlife. Cyndy writes: “Winston…….formally known as Frog has been living his best life since #adoption this past Saturday. Thank you all for taking him in and hosting the #adoptionevent so that we could give him his #foreverhome. Tonight I decided to do an #AdoptionAnnouncementPhotoShoot and couldn’t help but share how photogenic he is!” We’re so happy to hear that Winston, or little #frogdog, is being pampered and bringing such joy to the lives of his #newfamily!
On Tuesday, we got a little visit from a #ferret w On Tuesday, we got a little visit from a #ferret who was found in someone’s basement. She was feisty and scared as could be. During her stay here, our staff carried the lost little one around and became enamored with her. Well yesterday, we got some #goodnews. Her owner gave us a call to tell us the basement ferret was his own. 4 year old Annie got loose while he was taking out the trash, and the person who surrendered her was the owner’s neighbor. We hope you enjoy their #reunionphotos as much as we enjoyed witnessing the event! #reunitedanditfeelssogood #lovewillkeepustogether #lostandfound #helpishere
Rabies is a problem we’ve been struggling with s Rabies is a problem we’ve been struggling with since 2000 BC. Out of 2021’s animal cases in the U.S., #Virginia comes in at 8% of the reported cases, second only to Texas who sits at 12.4%. In Virginia, raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes are the most common carriers while rabbits, small rodents, and opossums are almost never infected. When it comes to people, about 60,000 people in the U.S. are exposed and seek treatment each year. Almost half of the victims are under 15.
Devastating all around the disease affects the central nervous system and is transmitted through direct contact to a rabid animal via bite, scratch, or saliva. Modifying the behavior of its host to increase chances of transmission, the virus causes infected to become very aggressive and violent. Mostly the incubation period stays between 1 and 3 months in humans. Once symptomatic, after about 2 to 10 days, an affected person is over 99% likely to die. If you have been exposed, wash the area and seek emergency attention right away as the first 10 days are most important. If given early, treatment is 100% effective.
Rabies is also 100% #preventable with vaccination. In fact, most states require rabies vaccines for pets after they reach between three and six months old. Oral vaccines can also be safely distributed aerially in baits which has has been successful in areas of Canada, France, and the U.S. Southwest VA currently has plans to carry this out for raccoons. Read more here: https://cardinalnews.org/2023/09/07/aircraft-to-drop-rabies-vaccines-for-raccoons-across-southwest-virginia/
Here at Angels of Assisi, we do our part to keep animals in our area vaccinated at low costs. We vaccinate every surgery animal unless a pet owner can produce proof of vaccination. Any feral cat who finds itself in our shelter or mobile clinic also receives a rabies vaccination. No matter the reason why an animal wasn’t vaccinated before, we are always happy to see pet owners and animal advocates who come in to do their part to reduce the presence of this horrible disease.

It’s #DeafDogAwarenessWeek, and we at Angels of It’s #DeafDogAwarenessWeek, and we at Angels of Assisi thought it would be the perfect time to tell the world about RoRo who came to us in August of 2021. She was #adopted and loved dearly during this time, but when her owner passed away, she was surrendered to us once again. RoRo is a 5 year old female #PitBull who is sweet, communicative, great with kids, and #hearingimpaired. She has not always been #hardofhearing, but she has always battled with food and seasonal #allergies. Those allergies caused severe ear infections which would not respond in any meaningful way to medical treatment. To relieve the pain and inflammation caused by the chronic infections, RoRo had to have surgery. After a Double Total Ear Canal Ablation which involves the removal of the ear canal, leaving the ear flap intact, RoRo feels much better. If you are considering adopting RoRo or a #deafdog like her, here are some #lifehacks to make your new relationship the best it can be: Attach a bell to your dog’s collar so you can find them since they will not come when called if they can’t see you.
Include a #DeafNote on your dog’s ID tag.
Communicate with #handsignals for #commands like sit, stay, come, and for your dog’s name as well.
Use a flashlight as an attention signal.
Wake them up by putting food under their nose. It’s a nice way to wake up, and it won’t startle them.
Teach any children who interact with the dog to be consistent with hand signals, flashlight signals, and how to wake them so your pet doesn’t have to adjust their understanding of communication per person. To adopt RoRo, visit angelsofassisi.org/applications or email adoptions@angelsogassisi.org.
To foster RoRo visit #RemmisList at angelsofassisi.org/foster/remmislist or email foster@angelsofassisi.org

Angels of Assisi has partnerships across Virginia Angels of Assisi has partnerships across Virginia and West Virginia to offer affordable #spay and #neuter to #communitiesinneed. Pets and #homelessshelteranimals are gathered at #localshelters and transported to Angels of Assisi to be #spayed and #neutered at #lowcosts. This helps pet owners who want to do their part in controlling #animaloverpopulation, but cannot afford treatment in their area and cannot make the trip to our #clinic. The dogs and cats travel to our #petclinic, receive treatment which always includes #rabiesvaccinations, and will usually go home the same day. Sometimes, sending a four legged family member on a trip alone is scary for a pet owner who is trying to do the right thing. Those owners often leave #specialhandling instructions, or “#lovenotes” on the pet carriers or in the paperwork. To say the least, #ourheartsarewarmed. Here are a few for you to enjoy as well. Meet Haven. Every once in a while we have a dog in Meet Haven. Every once in a while we have a dog in our care who just cannot find the right home. That’s our girl. Haven has unfortunately spent 6 of her 7 years in and out of our shelter. She has been nothing but sweet and as curious as a hound should be during her stay here. She can even go to events and walk around other dogs. However, when she claims someone as her one and only, she means it. She would likely thrive in a home with a single adult. She’s looking for a “you and me against the world” kind of adventure partner who will patiently provide structure and boundaries to help manage her nervousness. We can tell you this, if she finds her person, Haven will absolutely be a uniquely devoted best friend. If you think you may be Haven’s soulmate, please visit https://www.angelsofassisi.org/applications/ to fill out an application or contact adoptions@angelsofassisi.org. #adoptalessadoptablepetweek #adoptalessadoptablepet #adoptalessadoptabledogweek #adoptalessadoptabledog #petadoption #bigearsdontcare
Happy #InternationalRabbitDay! Meet Ozzi the #Amer Happy #InternationalRabbitDay! Meet Ozzi the #AmericanFuzzyLop, and Paris Hilton the #AngoraRabbit. Ozzi and Paris Hilton are two of our #adoptablerabbits here at Angels of Assisi. #Rabbits are the third most popular #pet after cats and dogs, and it’s no wonder! They are #apartmentfriendly, generally quiet, they have big personalities, and they’re intelligent! You can #teachbunniestricks and games like reverse fetch (they’ll throw the toy to you) and #tugofwar. Contrary to common belief, they can live just as long as dogs and cats with a life expectancy of 8 to 12 years in a home in contrast to the 2 to 3 years in the wild. They are very #socialanimals, so if you have one, consider bringing home a friend for them so they don’t get lonely (preferably another rabbit of the same gender). If you are interested in #adopting any of our rabbits here at Angels, please visit https://www.angelsofassisi.org/applications/ to fill out an application or contact adoptions@angelsofassisi.org.

At 8 years old, he’s still very excitable and curious, wanting to #explore anything he passes. Winston was #adopted out of the #shelter back in 2022. His owner loved him dearly, as we all do here, but they had to move and couldn’t take him along. Although Winston has acquired some wisdom and grace over his years, he will need a #family with some patience, as he still has some #leashwork and some manners to learn. But, while #bonding over #learningtogether, you’ll discover Winston’s #kindnature and #lovingheart. He loves toys, #bootyscratches, and hanging out with his favorite people. He is very sweet, he just needs a someone to be patient with him while he learns the world isn’t such a scary place. He loves other #dogs and would love to have a #dogsibling. #RemmisList is a list of animals in our care who are in the biggest need of short-term foster homes. Studies show that giving a dog or cat a #shelterbreak for even a night or two significantly #reducesstress which helps to make them more adoptable in the long run. Remmi’s list is made up of our #dogsandcats here at the Angels of Assisi #shelter who most need some time out of the #kennels. These animals are either #senior, #longtermresidents, in need of medical care, in dire need of a #mentalhealthbreak from the shelter, or all of the above. Our staff will even provide training on medication administration for our #specialneeds animals. While the time in our shelter is temporary for all of its residents, Remmi’s list aims to highlight those who could use a #vacation the most. If you’re interested in becoming a #shorttermpetfoster parent to an animal on Remmi’s List, please contact foster@angelsofassisi.org.
