Counting Our Blessings

On Wednesday night, we had a fire at Angels of Assisi. We are very grateful to report that all of the pets in the building are safe. We thank each and every volunteer who came to help. Many volunteers showed up in PJs and in bare feet, but they did it to save the animals- mission accomplished.

By 5 pm Thursday, all the animals were brought back to Angels of Assisi. We still have a lot of work to do, but the dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and bunnies that call Angels of Assisi home, are back safe and sound.

We appreciate everyone's concern and support more than words can express...

 Dear Friends,

As you may have seen on the news, last night we had a fire at Angels of Assisi, the building on Campbell Avenue where many homeless pets find refuge until they are united with their forever families.

Due to the fast response of the Roanoke Police and Fire Department, all the animals were saved and are doing well. We extend our sincerest thanks to them and to Roanoke Animal Control. You all were true professionals, and our city is a better place for your services.

A special thank you to the Botetourt County Animal Control Officers who also came last night and who are always ready to help in a moment's notice.

We appreciate the staff at the Roanoke Center for Animal Control and Protection for housing our animals overnight and for making all of us feel welcome. Even though it was well after midnight, they greeted us with a smile and a helping hand. We are grateful that none of their animals had to be displaced during the triage process.

Thank you to Dr. Wadstrom and staff from Animal Care Center of Salem for taking many of our kittens and several dogs to help place for adoption. We feel they have been given an extraordinary second chance for a loving home.

At Angels of Assisi, we are used to being the rescuers. We have helped with puppy mill cases, abandoned hunting dogs, neglected bunnies, dehydrated cows, and forgotten pot-belly pigs to name a few.

Last night, we were rescued by countless volunteers, radio stations, foster families, people who took the day off of work to help clean cages, our own staff who worked all night and again all day, the Roanoke Building Inspector who was there as soon as we called, the media by getting our story out, those who said "tell me what to do" and companies who are collecting donations.

We have felt the love and out-pouring of support our community has for homeless pets.

More importantly, we have a renewed hope that as we continue to work together, we will live in a community that ceases to have homeless pets. Together we can do it.

With heartfelt appreciation,

The Angels of Assisi Family

Giles County Kitties Pass Another Milestone

Many of the cats rescued from Giles County a few weeks ago are one step closer to going up for adoption. Spay and neuter surgeries were done on many of the cats today, and they will be ready for adoption on Saturday, June 20th.

Special thanks to Dr. Spangler and the many volunteers who helped with surgery. We also thank the Humane Society of the United States for donating crates and supplies. And, as always, we appreciate our photographer, Vickie Holt, for her hours of dedication to capture their true spirits.

The cats have all settled in very nicely, and really enjoy sticking their paws out through their crate doors to grab your attention!

The adoption center is open from 2 pm - 6 pm everyday.

Giles County Cat Rescue

Angels of Assisi welcomes over 80 cats from a large rescue in Giles County.

A few will need medical treatment, and all of them need some time to stretch their legs, enjoy fresh food and water, and get used to their new surroundings. They arrived at Angels of Assisi tired from the trip, but seemd very grateful for a caring touch and soft bed.

We will be evaluating the cats over the next few days, and appreciate any donations towards their care and housing.

Pictured below is Gabby with her 4 newborn kittens. With a fever of over 103 degrees, Gabby was started on antibiotics and special food within an hour of arriving at Angels of Assisi. She has a soft bed and a quiet room to rest and take care of her new babies.

We will be posting more information soon.

As always, we appreciate your support!

Our Mission

Angels of Assisi and Harmony Farm Sanctuary are dedicated to the preservation
and care of all living creatures.

We provide reduced cost medical care to companion animals with
special emphasis on spaying and neutering to prevent pet overpopulation.

We provide shelter, care and sustenance to
companion and domesticated farm animals in need,
including an adoption center for homeless dogs and cats
and a farm animal sanctuary.

Our goal is to educate the public that companion and farm animals
are not objects for human use but are living, sentient creatures
deserving respect and kindness.
